PROJECT ABILITY

Introduction:

Project Ability is an initiative aimed at improving the socio-economic status, self-confidence, and self-esteem of students with disabilities across Nigeria. The project was launched in November 2017 and has impacted over 100 students with disabilities in the North Central geo-political region of Nigeria.

Objectives:

The primary objective of Project Ability is to empower students with disabilities with skills to boost their confidence and drive them to self-actualize and become active participants in nation-building. The project aims to achieve the following specific objectives:

  1. To provide vocational and entrepreneurial skills training to students with disabilities.
  2. To facilitate access to education for students with disabilities.
  3. To provide mentorship and counseling services to students with disabilities.
  4. To create awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities.

Implementation:

Project Ability is implemented in partnership with schools and organizations that cater to students with disabilities. The project team consists of professionals from different fields including vocational training, education, counseling, and disability advocacy.

The project is implemented through the following activities:

  1. Vocational and entrepreneurial skills training: Students with disabilities are provided with vocational and entrepreneurial skills training in various fields such as tailoring, bead making, soap making, and computer skills. The training is conducted by professionals in the respective fields.
  2. Education support: Project Ability provides education support to students with disabilities by providing assistive devices such as Braille machines, hearing aids, and wheelchairs. The project also provides financial support for school fees and other related expenses.
  3. Mentorship and counseling services: Project Ability provides mentorship and counseling services to students with disabilities. The services are provided by professionals who are trained in disability counseling.
  4. Awareness creation: Project Ability creates awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities through sensitization campaigns in schools and communities. The campaign is aimed at changing the negative attitudes towards persons with disabilities and promoting inclusion.

Results:

Since its launch in November 2017, Project Ability has impacted over 100 students with disabilities in the North Central geo-political region of Nigeria. The project has achieved the following results:

  1. 60 students have been trained in vocational and entrepreneurial skills.
  2. 40 students have received education support.
  3. 30 students have received mentorship and counseling services.
  4. Increased awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities.

Conclusion:

Project Ability is an initiative aimed at improving the socio-economic status, self-confidence, and self-esteem of students with disabilities across Nigeria. The project has been implemented in partnership with schools and organizations that cater to students with disabilities. Through the provision of vocational and entrepreneurial skills training, education support, mentorship and counseling services, and awareness creation, Project Ability has impacted the lives of over 100 students with disabilities. The project team is committed to continuing the implementation of the project and expanding its reach to other regions of Nigeria.
