Every year on January 4th, the world celebrates World Braille Day, honoring the legacy of Louis Braille and the power of literacy for persons who are blind or visually impaired. Braille is more than a reading and writing system; it is a gateway to independence, dignity, education, and equal opportunity.
Yet, millions of blind persons in Nigeria and across the globe continue to face barriers in accessing information, education, and opportunities due to the lack of awareness, limited resources, and societal misconceptions about Braille. These barriers highlight deeper issues of inclusion, empowerment, and human rights.
The Intervention In commemoration of this global day, Inclusive Voice for Women & Youths Initiative (IVWYI) partnered with Melody FM, Delta Broadcasting Service Warri (DBS), to host an educative radio program on Braille reading and writing for the blind.
The program featured a live interview with Mr. Johnson Akpankiniovo, the former Deputy National Chairman of the Nigerian Association of the Blind. Listeners were engaged through interactive phone-in sessions, where members of the public asked important questions about Braille, its uses, and its role in empowering persons with visual impairments.
Key Contributions • Awareness & Knowledge: Educated the general public on the importance of Braille as a tool for literacy, independence, and participation in society. • Representation & Inclusion: Provided a platform for the voices of persons with visual impairments to be heard and their realities understood. • Community Engagement: Enabled direct dialogue between experts and the public, breaking down misconceptions about blindness and literacy. • Advocacy & Human Rights: Reinforced the message that access to information and education is a fundamental right for all, including persons with disabilities.
