Albinism Health & Inclusion – Protecting every shade of beauty

In a world that strives for diversity and inclusion, no one should be left behind. Yet, individuals with albinism continue to face profound challenges that threaten their health, dignity, and futures. Beyond social stigma and discrimination, the absence of melanin exposes them to dangerous levels of UV radiation, making them highly vulnerable to skin cancer.

The Intervention
To address these unique health challenges, the Inclusive Voice for Women and Youth Initiative (IVWYI), in partnership with the Women and Girls with Albinism Network (WGWAN), spearheaded a lifesaving intervention in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Together, they:

• Distributed sunscreen lotions to children and youth with albinism, providing a simple but critical shield against harmful UV rays.
• Organized educational sessions on sun safety, self-care, and protection practices, equipping families with knowledge to safeguard themselves daily.
• Fostered community awareness and empathy, helping to break stigma and promote inclusion for people with albinism.

• Health Protection: Significantly reduced the risk of skin cancer among beneficiaries through regular access to sunscreen.
• Confidence & Participation: Gave children and youth with albinism the freedom to engage more fully in school and community life.
• Education & Empowerment: Provided families with practical knowledge on sun safety, enabling sustainable health practices.
• Community Solidarity: Mobilized volunteers, organizations, and individuals to rally behind the cause, raising awareness and combating stereotypes.

Impact
This initiative has created immediate and long-term benefits for children and youth with albinism in the FCT:
